Sunday 20th September - Standlake Open Championship
ROLL OF HONOUR
2015 732 DAZ KITSON
2016 212 NEIL SOULE
2017 352 ANDY WEBB
2018 87 JACK WEST
2019 856 PAUL WEBB
The 6th running of the Standlake Open
Championship sees a massive 40 cars booked in ready to fight for the trophy. Not only will this be the largest attendance
for the Open Championship, it will in fact be the biggest F2 turnout ever seen
at Standlake and possibly at any Outlaw tarmac/concrete meeting ever!
The race itself is looking like it will be completely
wide open, with the unpredictable nature of the Standlake track combined with
the larger grids meaning any number of drivers are in with a chance of victory.
Leading the ‘home’ entry will be defending champion and
current Standlake points champion, 856 Paul Webb. Having already claimed the Norfolk Championship
at Swaffham last month and then scored a heat and final double at the August
Bank Holiday Standlake meeting, it would be hard to argue against him being the
first double winner of the title.
The other Webb brothers 352 Andy and 421 Gary are no
strangers to victory at Standlake either.
2017 champion Andy might have handed his car over to daughter 185 Jess,
but is definitely still a threat in his old car.
Gary is a 4-time Standlake points champion and will be looking to add his
first Open championship and yet another Webb name onto the trophy, bettering his 2nd place in 2017.
Other local drivers looking to add their name to the
trophy for the first time will be current 2020 Standlake points leader 563
Keith Walding who has a heat and final double at the July meeting to his name. His only appearance in the Open being a 4th
place in 2018, this is something he will no doubt be looking to improve upon.
105 Louis Williams sits atop the Southern Points championship
for 2020 and as another final winner around Standlake this season he will be a
difficult one to beat. 155 Carl Lewis
pushed Paul Webb all the way in 2019 in their battle for the points title, with
it eventually coming down to the penultimate race of the season. Carl took the chequered flag 15 times last
season including 3 finals (all at Standlake), so has proven he can work his way
through the pack.
716 Jim Muckian won the opening race of the 2020 season
and will be one of those hoping for a strong finish, while 261 Roger Mountney
and 508 Terry Butcher both have podium finishes in the Open to their names. There have also been a number of impressive
lower grader performances so far this season and if the race ends up with
plenty of bumper work, there are many who will look to capitalise.
The visiting threat is headed by Grimley points champion
42 Ash Greening. Ash made his first
visit of the season last meeting and scored a heat and GN double, his heat win
in particular being taken in spectacular style.
Ringwood based 13 Gavin Ward has more wins to his name in 2020 than
anyone else, and with Standlake currently being the only place he has yet to take
the flag he will definitely be looking to change that come Sunday.
For the first time since 2017, the northern Outlaw class
are set to be represented as a double-figure entry from them is expected. 725 Paul Broatch is definitely the standout
name, with both National Points and World titles to his name in the Outlaw
class as well as a 3rd place finish in the Open in 2017, his liberal
use of the bumper could see him go even better than this in 2020. 2018 Outlaw points champion 477 Guy Mather
Brightmore and Scottish entrant 92 John Hogg might be making their first
appearances at Standlake, but both have plenty of potential for a strong finish,
while 888 Simon Edwards has experience at the track and has shown himself in the
past to run a fast pace – definitely making him another potential challenger.
With 4 x 20 car heats and a last chance race pencilled in
as the provisional format, the final grid for the championship race itself will
almost certainly provide a few shake ups and what will no doubt be another superb
afternoon’s racing. See you all there!
