Standlake F2 - 31/05/21

Standlake’s third meeting of the season saw a record-equalling turnout for a domestic meeting, with 33 cars in attendance.  There were new cars for 47 Jake Perry and 508 Terry Butcher, whose retro looking car certainly stood out.

The visiting entry again saw several Grimley-based drivers including a first Standlake appearance for 242 Mick Jackson.  He was joined by son 299 Will, 42 Ash Greening and 246 Alex Broadway.  Finally, there was a first appearance in almost 2 years for 521 Phil Trigg.

242 MICK JACKSON AMONG THOSE LINED UP FOR HEAT 1

Heat 1 saw the largest field of the day, as 24 cars made the track, although 776 James Trigg pulled off just as the green flagged dropped and would unfortunately take no further part in the meeting.  Pole sitter 210 Patrick Somerton lead into turn 1 while 7 Josh Cornish dropped back to 4th as 416 Dave Muckian and 744 Harry Adams came through, although Muckian spun on the exit of the corner and dropped to the back of the field.

Perry made a move on Adams later on the opening lap and jumped up into 2nd with 486 Jez Watts following him through for 3rd.  The red graders were already battling amongst themselves in the early stages as 563 Keith Walding passed 155 Carl Lewis and 352 Andy Webb, before coming under attack from Lewis and Greening shortly afterwards, as Lewis then put the bumper in on Walding who in turn moved Greening wide and allowed the 155 car to move underneath the pair.

82 Keith Richens spun onto the infield coming out of turn 2 as Perry moved by Somerton for the lead, as the latter then found himself bested by Watts to drop back into 3rd.    Lewis gained on 535 Ryan Stoodley to move up into 7th as he started to move clear of the rest of the red grade pack.  Adams and Cornish tangled on turn 3 and with the cars stuck together, the red flag came out.  488 Owen Stringer pulled off, leaving 20 cars to contest the restart.

On the restart, Greening gained on 509 Jordan Butcher and 420 Ade Baker to jump up into 8th place as Walding gained on 856 Paul Webb.  Somerton was a spinner on turn 4, forcing those behind to take avoiding action.  This allowed Lewis to gain a couple of place as he moved up into 2nd behind Perry, with Watts now 3rd and 2 Craig Passey 4th.  Paul Webb regained the place from Walding in the battle for what was now 7th, as the pair reeled in 534 Tom Stoodley on turn 1 and then Walding moved back ahead of Webb on the exit of turn 2 and found himself up into 5th as Watts started to drop back.

Greening then came under attack for 4th and Walding and Webb gained on the 42 car, while Lewis made his move and snatched the lead from Perry on the back straight and Walding was now 3rd as he passed Passey around turn 4.  The latter then dropped back to 6th as Webb and then Greening gained places.  Perry’s 2nd place as now under threat and Walding made his move on turn 3, quickly followed through by Webb, with Greening then also moving ahead of Perry on the next corner.

Tom Stoodley and Butcher were then both spinners on turn 3, while Andy Webb gained on Passey as Perry went out wide and lost several places to drop out of the top 10.  Walding went wide on the exit of turn 2 and lost 2nd to Webb as Greening moved through for 3rd, although the 563 car was back ahead of Greening shortly after as the pair swapped places several times over the next couple of laps.  With 3 laps remaining Walding retook 3rd and looked to hold the position as Baker and Richens moved up on Passey for 5th and 6th respectively.  Up front Lewis held a comfortable lead over Paul Webb and came through to take his 3rd win of the season, while 3rd place Walding spun on the final corner under pressure from Greening and found himself scrambling through an infield puddle to just cross the line in 10th as Greening took 3rd.

Result: 155, 856, 42, 352, 420, 82, 535, 2, 716, 563

Heat 2 saw a slightly smaller field of 20 cars out on track as Adams lead the field away into turn 1 ahead of 321 Maisie Emms and Stringer.  714 Louis Rayner moved ahead of Watts into turn 3 for 4th spot as Greening gained on Paul Webb on the opening lap.  Watts then retook the position from Rayner, although the pair found themselves under attack from Passey who gained on both, with the 486 car then losing out to Somerton and Will Jackson later in the lap.

Emms snatched the lead from Adams, who moved out wide and dropped back to 5th before 105 Louis Williams was a spinner on turn 4.  Jackson snatched 3rd from Somerton on turn 2 and then moved into 2nd as he dived underneath Stringer into turn 1.  185 Jess Webb was reeled in by Paul Webb and Greening, as the latter pairing also gained on Keith Richens and Ryan Stoodley.

Quickly moving through the traffic ahead of them, Webb and Greening suddenly found themselves 3rd and 4th respectively as they gained on Stringer down the back straight.  Somerton slotted into 5th but was having to fend off Richens and Stoodley for the place as Passey moved up on Adams and dropped the former leader out of the top 10.  Emms then lost the lead around turns 3 and 4 as Webb and Greening came through.  The former was then under attack from those behind and dropped back several places over the next lap as Jackson took 3rd ahead of Somerton and Stringer.

713 Liam Cornish slowed to a halt on the back straight as Richens gained on Stringer and Somerton for 4th as Stringer held 5th and Ryan Stoodley moved ahead of Somerton for 6th, then snatching 5th from Stringer shortly afterwards.  Emms clipped a tyre on the exit of turn 4 and brought out the red flags with just 5 laps remaining, as Somerton lost a few places and dropped behind a trio of Webbs in the form of 352 Andy, Jess and 421 Gary.

On the restart Greening made his move on Paul Webb for the lead as Somerton retired.  Richens bested Jackson for 3rd as Ryan Stoodley also came through, although the latter was back under attack from the 299 car on the very next corner.  Andy Webb moved ahead of Stringer for 5th, allowing Gary and Jess Webb to also gain a place on Stringer.  On the final lap Stoodley spun on turn 4 and Passey moved ahead of Stringer while Greening was able to hold off Paul Webb to take his first win at Standlake this season while Richens held on for 3rd ahead of Jackson.

Result: 42, 856, 82, 299, 352, 421, 185, 2, 488, 714

20 cars were on track for heat 3 as pole-sitter 821 Linz Richens lead into turn 1 ahead of Emms and Dave Muckian.  Perry moved ahead of Jess Webb and Rayner on turn 2 as Richens’ lead was short-lived, with Emms now taking up the running.  Josh Cornish snatched 2nd as Phil Trigg moved into 3rd with Richens dropping back to 7th after being forced wide, while Muckian was an early retirement.

Perry then moved up into 2nd as he passed Trigg around the outside as Cornish also dropped back a few places.  Trigg regained on Perry for 2nd as Jess Webb also made a move on the latter and was now 3rd.  She then snatched 2nd from Trigg on turn 3 as Perry dropped back and Cornish slotted into 4th ahead of Rayner and Jordan Butcher.

Walding moved ahead of Lewis on turn 4 for 7th place as the leading red-graders battled amongst themselves again and Lewis retook the place on the following lap.  Webb reeled in Emms for the lead as Butcher passed Rayner for 5th, which lead to the 714 car dropping back as Will Jackson, Lewis and Walding also gained a place.

Walding moved back ahead of Lewis on turn 3 as Cornish was a spinner.  Butcher then spun on turn 1, with Walding collecting the spun car as Lewis retook the place and moved up into 4th.  The red flags were then called for the stricken cars of Butcher and Cornish with 8 laps remaining.

The restart saw Webb leading ahead of Trigg, Emms, Walding and Lewis.  On the opening lap Walding moved Emms wide for 3rd on turn 3, allowing Lewis to also gain on the latter around turn 4.  As Walding and Lewis continued their battle they both collected the armco on the exit of turn 2, allowing Gary Webb, Williams and Baker to move up a couple of places as a result.  Emms then spun on turn 3 and Lewis slowed with damage but continued to limp round the final few laps.

Baker and Walding gained on Trigg down the back straight for 4th and 5th respectively while the scramble for the lower half of the top 10 saw 716 James Muckian and 623 Rob Dobie reel in Trigg right at the death with Emms recovering for 10th.  At the head of the field, Jess Webb was able to maintain a gap over Gary Webb and she came through for her 1st win of the season, with Williams taking 3rd.

Result: 185, 421, 105, 420, 563, 299, 716, 623, 521, 321

17 of the 19 qualifiers made it out for the final, with Stringer and Williams both missing out with earlier damage.  Emms got the better of fellow white grader Trigg into turn 1 while Walding made a slow start from the front of the red grade and was passed by Baker and Lewis.  Emms then spun on turn 2, handing the lead to Trigg as Rayner and Passey moved up into 2nd and 3rd respectively, while Jess Webb dropped back several places as Dobie and Will Jackson gained.

Greening and Gary Webb then tangled on turn 1 and although both were able to continue, they were now right at the back of the field.  Trigg quickly built up a length-of-the-straight lead, as Keith Richens and Ryan Stoodley gained on Dobie.  Lewis made the break from the rest of the red grade and moved ahead of Jess Webb and James Muckian.  Dobie retook 7th from Stoodley while Paul Webb was able to dive underneath both Andy Webb and Walding on turn 4 as the red graders started to break into the top 10.

Lewis moved up into 4th place as he gained on Jackson and Richens, while Greening was involved in another tangle with Gary Webb, this time sending the 42 car spinning onto the infield underneath the starters’ rostrum.  Passey and Rayner were then bested by Lewis as he snatched 2nd place and set off in pursuit of Trigg for the lead.  Jackson claimed 4th from Passey as Rayner slotted into 3rd, although the latter was then under attack from Jackson into turn 1 and dropped back to 4th.

Trigg’s lead was then snatched by Lewis as the pair exited turn 4 as behind the pair, Jackson swapped places with Rayner again to retake 3rd.  The former was then soon into 2nd as he got the better of Trigg on turn 2, while Rayner was reeled in by Passey for 4th as Richens and Ryan Stoodley also came through on the 714 car.  Walding moved Dobie wide for 8th as Baker claimed 9th spot ahead of Jess Webb, with the latter then dropping out of the top 10 as both Paul and Gary Webb came through.

Passey took 3rd from Trigg as Richens was then up into 4th as both he and Stoodley gained on Trigg on turn 4.  Walding was next to reel in the 521 car, having passed Rayner beforehand and now finding himself in 6th.  Baker gained on the pair shortly afterwards to follow Walding through for 7th.  As the last couple of laps began, Rayner and Trigg dropped from the top 10 as the remaining red graders caught and passed the pair.  On the final lap, Gary Webb snatched 8th from Paul Webb and Richens managed to grab the final podium spot from Passey, as Lewis came through for his first final win of the season ahead of Jackson and Richens.

Result: 155, 299, 82, 2, 535, 563, 420, 421, 856, 352

HEAT AND FINAL DOUBLE FOR 155 CARL LEWIS

Despite a fast turnaround between the final and the Grand National, another good field of 21 cars made it back out for the final race of the day.  Adams took the lead into turn 1 after starting on the 2nd row, although he went wide and was passed by Josh Cornish for the lead.  Walding clipped a marker tyre and then rode over a 2nd before spinning onto the infield.  This brought out a red flag as Emms came to a hault stuck on the turn 4 infield.

19 cars made the complete restart after Rayner and Ryan Stoodley were retirees from the first start.  Adams again led into turn 1 ahead of Josh Cornish and Linz Richens, as Mick Jackson was an opening lap spinner on the back straight.  Passey gained 3rd as a result of Richens dropping back, with Jess Webb gaining on Somerton for 4th.  Walding then gained on Greening and Gary Webb around turns 3 and 4 to sit 7th, before moving Dobie wide for 6th as Greening came under attack from Paul Webb.

Jess Webb gained on Cornish for 2nd, with Passey also moving ahead of the latter for 3rd.  Somerton lost out to Walding for 5th on turn 4 as Webb then snatched the lead from Adams into turn 1.  Walding moved Cornish wide to sit 4th before Passey gained on Adams for 2nd on turn 3.  Somerton then dropped back as Paul Webb and Greening moved through, with Gary Webb not far behind the pair.  The trio then reeled in Cornish a lap later, as Walding hit Adams wide to claim 3rd and Greening took 5th from Paul Webb.

Cornish then spun on the exit of turn 4, ripping a wheel off in the process and bringing out the red flags.  As the cars sat awaiting the restart, Jess Webb was forced to forfeit her lead as her car boiled up.  This gave Passey the lead with Adams reinstated to 2nd and Walding 3rd ahead of Greening and Paul Webb completing the top 5.

On the restart Walding was moved wide by Greening into turn and dropped back to 7th as those behind gained.  Adams was then caught by Greening for 2nd as Paul and Gary Webb also gained, while Lewis had gained the most from all this and now found himself up to 6th.  Walding was spun by Jackson on turn 2 and was forced to retire, as Paul Webb gained on Greening for 2nd.

A lap later and Webb took the lead from Passey around turn 4, with Greening following the 856 car through to sit 2nd on the next corner.  Passey then dropped to 4th as Gary Webb came through, although the former was to retire shortly afterwards.  Gary Webb then got the better of Greening for 2nd as Will Jackson claimed 5th from Keith Richens.  Dobie was another spinner on turn 3, as Jackson and Richens continued to exchange places.

Broadway gained 8th from Adams, although the pair were both under attack shortly afterwards from Mick Jackson, who moved ahead of both in the closing stages.  As the final lap began, Emms was a spinner on turn 4 and although several cars had to take avoiding action, it did not shake the order up and it was Paul Webb who came through for his first win of the season ahead of Gary Webb and Greening.

Result: 856, 421, 42, 155, 299, 82, 210, 242, 246, 744
