Sunday sees the 7th running of Standlake’s Open Championship and at the time of writing, would see the largest ever turnout at the track with 36 cars booked in, with almost all points of the Outlaw F2 scene represented.
ROLL OF HONOUR
2015 732 Daz Kitson
2016 212 Neil Soule
2017 352 Andy Webb
2018 87 Jack West
2019 856 Paul Webb
2020 856 Paul Webb
There are five scheduled track debutants at this point, with recent Spedeworth convert 254 Harry Heffer joining 346 Anthony Warne in making their first visits away from Swaffham for this meeting. Double (Northern) Outlaw World Champion and current British Champion 1 Danny Wragg is making his first visit to be in attendance and is joined from the Outlaw ranks by 132 Dean Mawson, fresh off his first ever race win last weekend at Brampton to claim the Yorkshire Cup. Finally, 101 Zak Moores will be making his F2 debut, having previously raced 3 meetings at Grimley since moving across from the Prod A class; the former Juniors front-runner is obviously no stranger to the track, having a best finish of 2nd in the Junior points chart.
The 2020 running of the meeting broke Standlake’s previous highest attendance record as the 34 cars in the pits competed over 4 heats and a consolation before deciding the final grid. 856 Paul Webb became the first double-winner of the title as he retained his title ahead of 42 Ash Greening and 725 Paul Broatch. This season Webb has yet to take a final win so far, but it would not be surprising to see him come out on top on Sunday, and he definitely starts as one of the main favourites.
155 Carl Lewis is the leading race-winner at Standlake this year, with 8 wins in total including one final. He has not yet managed to turn his pace into a championship win but based on current form -with 2 heat wins in his last meeting and currently top of the track points – 2021 could finally be his year to claim the title.
The 2020 Southern Points Champion 105 Louis Williams has raced every possible meeting so far this year and looks certain to retain the silver roof for another 12 months. His 12 wins (11 heats and 1 final – up to 17th September) have all come away from Standlake however, so he will be wanting to correct that and add the Open title to his points championship, providing he can keep out of trouble.
92 John Hogg will be making the long trip down from Berwick for the 3rd time this season. With 2 previous heat wins to his name, including one at the last meeting in August, he poses a real threat to take the title ‘away’ from the southern tracks and cannot be discounted.
Amongst the remaining red grade entry, there have been 6 other race winners at Standlake this year with only Williams and 421 Gary Webb yet to take the chequered flag. All are more than capable of making a challenge, with Ash Greening and Will Jackson amongst the semi-regular visitors who can pose a real threat for the title, while last meeting’s final winner 185 Jess Webb may now be joining the red grade and has the pace to challenge those around her.
While the drawn-grid format might not suit some, it will definitely throw up some interesting races as those towards the rear will be hoping for plenty of action in a similar vain to last meeting to allow them to grab as many points as possible for a place on the championship grid. 416 Dave Muckian, 623 Rob Dobie, 521 Phil and 776 James Trigg will be amongst several lower graders looking to use their experience to their benefit while others around them risk getting caught out by Standlake’s every changing levels of grip.
In total 16 different drivers have taken the chequered flag this year at Standlake and 24 overall across the southern tracks, which shows just how wide open the formula is currently and the title could really be claimed by anyone, so the chances of these totals increasing is certainly high.
Good luck to all taking part!
